Dowry death: woman, 22, set ablaze dies

Mumbai, Nov. 4 -- In a case of dowry death on Saturday, a 22-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries after she was allegedly set ablaze by her husband and in-laws on Thursday at their Malad (East) residence.
Following the incident, the Kurar police arrested her husband and his parents under harassment and murder charges.
According to the police, Heena Shaikh married Altaf, 34, two years ago.
The couple fought often after she failed to arrange Rs. 50,000 as dowry. Following a spat on Thursday night, Lal Mohammad, 57 (Heena's father-in-law) and Altaf poured kerosene on Heena and set her ablaze, even as Rehameen Bi, 54, (her mother-in-law) witnessed it.
Gunaji Sawant, inspector of Kurar police, said: "Heena kept changing her statements. When we first recorded her statement, she said she attempted suicide. The very next day, she said her in-laws and husband set her ablaze. We therefore booked them for murder soon after she died."
Heena's neighbours told HT that her in-laws frequently tortured her. Fehmida, Heena's neighbour said, "Heena was a well-mannered girl who was exploited by her in-laws. She was pregnant with twins who died before the delivery and Rehmeen used to blame Heena for their death."
The accused have been remanded in police custody till November 7.
